UK GAY MAGAZINE - NOVEMBER 2000 - REVIEW OF 'GIVING UP GIVING IN'

SHEENA EASTON 'Giving Up Giving In'

Next up, a mention for the modern girl herself, Sheena Easton. Remember her? This is the Scottish Darling who was the subject of an Esther Rantzen telly documentary who went on to score massive worldwide hits and record with the likes of Prince. She moved to Los Angeles years ago and retired soon after, so I was as surprised to receive a new record from her as you probably are to be reading about her in this column. Well now she's back with a pretty stunning release. The track is a cover of the Three Degrees classic, Giving Up Giving In and the package features mixes from just about the biggest UK remixers of the moment, namely Sharp and Joey Negro. Joey Negro gives us the A-side mix, taking things in a discotastic direction, with surprisingly more energy than many of his mixes, but with the usual lush production values and classy vibes. The Sharp Boys excel themselves too, with two very accessible mixes, that never get too pounding and remain as accessible as anything they've ever done. There's a fourth mix called the Rodox Dub, which is a dubby disco thang. A real quality release which should be a huge hit. My only reservation is that it really could be anyone singing, and most people will no doubt think it is just the Three Degrees doing the rounds again, whereas an artist of the stature of Ms Easton probably deserves an original production. Whatever, it's gonna be a big hit single, if you ask me. Released on Universal at the beginning of December.
